It is actually not corn at all, but a variety of sorghum, which is a coarse, tall growing grass. These are very useful plants! Broomcorn's long fibrous tops make it perfect for use as brooms (hence the name). I am sure everyone has had or does have a broom made of these great plants! It is all brooms ever used to be made out of before plastics began being used! Make your own broom today or just grow these giant beauties as a gorgeous ornamental! Broomcorn is very easy to grow and should be planted in May or early June in rows, approximately 3-6 inches apart. Water frequently and well and enjoy.
